MIND THE GAP poetically delves into the complex reality of queer relationships, exploring the gap between the private and public. Two performers negotiate the tension field within their partnership – having to navigate intimacy, mutual support, and dependency within the space between self-perception and public judgement from the outside.
Combining physical intensity with situational interaction, the performance lures the audience to experience the emotional and physical dynamics of a relationship from close by. The choreography opens up a space for reflection on equality, empathy, and the challenges that shape every relationship – regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
The piece was developed on the basis of interviews with members of the queer community, whose voices serve as sources of inspiration. Yet, beyond the queer perspective, MIND THE GAP generally questions social forms of personal restriction and freedom. The piece is not about sexuality but asks us to reflect on the ways in which we constrain ourselves and others through norms and expectations.
